The first glimpse when you encounter Langelinie is the astonishing Little Mermaid statue. Standing at only 1.25 meters high and weighing around 175 kg, this marvel has been one of the symbols of Copenhagen since its unveiling on August 23, 1913. It was a present from the brewer Carl Jacobsen of the Carlsberg Breweries. It was made by a sculptor by the name of Edvard Erichsen. Every year it is celebrated in a special way and 75% of tourists who visit Copenhagen throughout the year visit the famous Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid represent the Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen about a mermaid who fell in love with a prince who lived on land and went outside the water in order to be with her one true love. The story goes more in depth as this mermaid gave an ultimate sacrifice in order to be with her love where unfortunately never happens.
The Little Mermaid is designed to show both characteristics of the human form and the fish form in order to distinguish the statue. It has a slight resemblance to the Pania of the Reef on the beach front at Napier in New Zealand. For some time, The Copenhagen City Council decided to exhibit the Little Mermaid at the Danish Pavillon during the Expo 2010 in Shanghai during May 2010 to October 2010. The Little Mermaid is once again in her original location in Copenhagen where many can see the amazing statue.
