The 2010 edition of the European Consumers Awards saw Lisbon win for the category “Best Destination in Europe”.
The city of Lisbon was in fact selected as the most appealing travel destination by the European Consumers Association. The European Consumers Choice is a non-profit independent organization based in Brussels that rewards each year a list of products chosen by European consumers and a specially appointed jury.
Lisbon’s beauty and charm was finally recognized and praised internationally: the city was described by the Association as “a scenario combining the grandiosity of its history and a vanguard path toward its future, Lisbon is endowed with unique natural beauty and fascinating tourist attractions, which are intensified by the city and surrounding region’s diversity and quality”.
The criteria upon which the city was chosen among its nine competitors – Barcelona, London, Bilbao, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Lyon, and Helsinki – are the quality of life and infrastructure, as well as the range of tourist and cultural services offered to the visitors.
The city’s original historical and cultural soul has been preserved through the years and is today available to all those who wish to discover it. The capital of Portugal offers a variety of cultural options and experiences to its tourists, from its wide and beautiful beaches to its pristine countryside and mountains, or its areas of historical interest for those who opt for a cultural vacation. With a privileged setting, lying of the Tagus Estuary just off the Atlantic Coast, and the perfect climate – the city boasts an almost constant presence of sun and warm days – Lisbon is a gem that shines, underlining the beauty of its unique architecture.
Lisbon’s charm is not just a European fact. The city was in fact awarded in October 2009 the Europe’s Leading Destination, the Best City Break and Leading Cruise Destination awards at the World Travel Awards.
Described as the “Oscars of the travel industry” by the Wall Street Journal, the World Travel Awards are the biggest and most prestigious prizes in the tourism industry, born to acknowledge and reward excellence across the world. Created in 1993, the WTA involves 183,000 professionals in 160 countries all over the world.
Last year Lisbon dominated the European awards by winning the important categories, and it has been once again nominated for the prestigious awards in 2010. Will Lisbon still keep on shining as Europe’s gem? Don’t miss the chance to discover it yourself!
