This tradition dates back to colonial times, when missionaries taught natives how to grow radishes, which reached exceptional proportions. Radish Night is celebrated in the Oaxaca Historical Centre, in the Plaza de la Constitucion (Zócalo).

Traditional occurrences in the city are the famous festivals. July is the time of year of la Guelaguetza – one of the largest and most celebrated festivals in Mexico.
