The Little Mermaid represent the Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen about a mermaid who fell in love with a prince who lived on land and went outside the water in order to be with her one true love. The story goes more in depth as this mermaid gave an ultimate sacrifice in order to be with her love where unfortunately never happens.

The Little Mermaid is designed to show both characteristics of the human form and the fish form in order to distinguish the statue. It has a slight resemblance to the Pania of the Reef on the beach front at Napier in New Zealand. For some time, The Copenhagen City Council decided to exhibit the Little Mermaid at the Danish Pavillon during the Expo 2010 in Shanghai during May 2010 to October 2010. The Little Mermaid is once again in her original location in Copenhagen where many can see the amazing statue.

At the restaurant entrance, you have to walk up the stairs – It is like going up to a “real” Copenhagen apartment, and beeing on the way to someone for a private dinner!

The restaurant is decorated so nice, and out of the windows in the main restaurant area, you can look straight into other small windows, where the Copenhagernes are preparing dinner in their kitchenets.

Service is warm and personal, and you feel welcome!

IL DONA’s chefcook Fabio Donadoni is a former michelinchef. But make no mistake! IL DONA do not serve michelin food at half price, but serves REALLY good italian food for the price!

Their concept is the choice between a small, medium or large menu to respectively 400, 500 or 600 DKK . Here you can choose to accompagny your meal with an accompanying wine menu. Either just the wine menu, or the super wine menu. IL DONA is particularly known for their natural wines, and knowledge of them.

We chose the medium menu with accompanying wines. The food was fantastic! It was nice to taste the Italian cuisine in menus, where everything did not fall so heavily in the stomach as normally. This is a light, green kitchen, where no doubts abot the use of good natural ingredients is made, and very high quality as well!

IL DONA also serves a la carte dishes.

We left IL DONA with a very nice feeling to be pampered, and having been someone’s guest and well taken care of througout the evening!

General Information:

In December 2009, Copenhagen has been at the centre of the world when it hosted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Copenhagen Summit. I have come to Copenhagen to find out more.

On the bed table of the hotel there isn’t a bible but the book “100 PLACES TO REMEMBER before they disappear”. The hotel actually sells it for 399 DKK. On page 4, I learn that the book is produced in accordance with the Nordic Eco-label “The Swan”. This ensures that strict environmental criteria are met with a restricted emission of CO2 in the production of the paper. This doe not prevent the book of being a beautiful coffee table book on glossy paper with magnificent photos. If anything else, it demonstrates that friendly to the environment does not mean necessarily ugly yellowish paper. The book contains a convincing pleading by Robert Glasser, Secretary General of CARE www.care.org. According to Glasser, climate change is already happening and therefore we have to both cut greenhouse emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change along four lines:

1) Technological (higher sea walls)
2) Behavioral (cut emissions)
3) Managerial (new approaches to farming)
4) Policy options (new regulations)

Is this already happening in Denmark?

Hotel Alexandra happens to be certified “The Green Key”. Looking it up on Google, I find www.greenkeyglobal.com. Mmh, a maple leaf, must be Canadian. I can see that Sofitel US and Fairmont are Green Key certified. Not only for lunatics and shabby places. Not that Hotel Alexandra is shabby but it is a bit original being a retro hotel. For sure, here the hotel is acting according to the policy option line. There are many hotels mainly in Canada that are certified Green Key.

Waking up this morning at 7.30, I see masses of bicycles on HC Andersens Bd. We are during the winter time, temperature is around 0 degree C, it is still dark… After breakfast, I asked the receptionist and she explained proudly that she too had come to work with her bicycle living half way to the airport. It is indeed faster than the bus. The weather? Well, only snow prevents her from cycling and they have had three weeks if snow this year (so far). Those Danes are acting on the behavioral line.

Surely, this is a very superficial first glance observation. Having been somehow been let down by my contacts here in Denmark, I have to resort on the best library, the internet, in order to find out more…

Carina is a receptionist at Hotel Alexandra, she is studying to become a teacher. She visited AOC  (Aarø & Co) with her father…

The visit to the Michelin restaurant AOC was an experience quite beyond the ordinary. By a large, well-endowed wine display, we were greeted by a gracious servant who took our coats and led us then to dinner.

The restaurant buzzes “feinscmeckerei” and perfection. The decor is minimalistic, but with a good sense of classic solid furniture and a comfortable lightning.

We chose the “sensory evening menu”, a 7-course meal with accompanying wine list, composed by Sommelier Christian Aarø (owner). The composition of wine and food was unbelievable and a great experience within itself. We had bubbles, smoke, heat, cold, colors – Different flavors to touch all the senses. The food was fabulous! The price of the menu with wine is 1795 DKK – Tip: Do buy the wine menu to complete the experience!

The service was on top! During our 5-hour evening at AOC, we were influenced by various people, both from the kitchen, administration and obviously talented servants. Christian Aarø (owner and sommelier) was our personal attention sommelier during our dinner. He made the wine menu for us as a unique experience, as we got his insights – of all of his thoughts behind the choices of wine to suit this sensory menu.

The restaurant AOC – is not just a restaurant with good food. It is a culinary journey – hard to live up to! AOC gets top marks and is recommendable to all who appreciate cuisine, wine and the perfect combination.

Søerne (The Lakes): Sankt Jørgens Sø, Peblinge Sø, Sortedams Sø.

Atmosphere: The tour around all the lakes is 6.3 km, and it stretches from  Frederiksberg via Nørrebro to Østerbro. A walk provides rich opportunities to watch Copenhagen’s many different styles of building. The atmosphere is a mixture of the pulsating heart of the city and the more relaxed lifestyle with cafés located around the lakes.

Other plusses: In the summer it is possible to rent water cycles at the café named ’Kaffesalonen’, and you can also enjoy a cup of coffee or tea on the ourdoor terrace of Kaffesalonen, which is located on the ’Peblinge’ lake at ’Dronning Louises’ bridge.

Atmosphere: Exclusive shops that sell second-hand classical Danish architect-designed furniture. One of Copenhagen’s quarters most worth seeing, and therefore also with many tourists.

Primary exhibition or genre: Brewer Carl Jacobsen’s ”Carlsberg beer” private collection, which was given to the Danish State. Primarily French and Danish art as well as classical Antiquity from the cultures around the Mediterranean.

Atmosphere: A big collection which is quite unique in one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful buildings.

Other plusses: The beautiful added winter garden built by the famous architect Henning Larsen, and the excellent café with wonderful cakes and tarts. Close to Hotel Alexandra.

Opening hours: June 2 to August 31, all day.

Atmosphere: A good local experience being able to take a swim in the harbor.

Other plusses: Lots of local inhabitants are grilling on the lawn in front of the harbor pool, when the weather allows. Nice view of the harbor and the life of the city.

Atmosphere: Towards evening the yellow lights are turned on, and the atmosphere of the skating rink is great.

Frederiksberg flea market, right behinds Frederiksberg Rådhus (City Hall).

They have the biggest (and nicest) selection of clothes. Add to this various diverse furniture items and trinkets, such as jewellery, china, small furniture, hats, ornaments, and everything in between. – Open Saturdays 9-15 from April till October.

The selection is quite touristic and expensive, and it reminds you a lot of the market at Gammel Strand. Antiques and porcelain with signatures and waves underneath are in focus. i.e. from ’Bing og Grøndahl’ plates with ornamented 70’ies pattern to antique globes, genuine oriental carpets, vases and pictures. – Open Saturdays  8-15 from April till October.

Atmosphere: Cozy and local! It is possible to sit outdoors if the weather is for it. Sniff the quite special local atmosphere of the inhabitants of ’Bryggen’ – the wharf!

Particularly good dishes: Sandwich & brunch.

Other plusses: Very local, almost no tourists! You may at the same time offer yourself a fresh morning walk along the beautiful wharf, ”Islands Brygge”

Particularly good dishes: Known for their homemade picnic baskets filled with Italian specialties!

Other plusses: The attractive ’King’s Garden’ – Kongens Have – is right across the street if you wish to enjoy your picnic there on a summer day!

Atmosphere: You feel as if you were at a restaurant in New York! Funky modern restaurant!

Atmosphere: Bright and lovely atmosphere with big windows and a view of the street life.

Particularly good dishes: The menu! (Not much à la carte). Therefore, you should not be fastidious but ready to experience new tastes!! (I recommend the wine menu Dkr. 650 for the menu!)

Other plusses: Kokkeriet is both a catering company, a chefs’ school, and a  gourmet restaurant! So, they make extra efforts for the presentation to be at the very top!

Price level: Lunch: 125 Dkr. Dinner: 150 – 200 Dkr.

Atmosphere: 100% Danish and very, very cozy! You feel you have landed in the old Copenhagen! Some of Denmark’s most famous artists have had their regular table here, among them H.C. Andersen & Ludvig Holberg.

Particularly good dishes: Set lunch (like in the good old days). Stone beef, which is served on hot glowing stones.

Other plusses: The oldest restaurant in Copenhagen! Close to Hotel Alexandra in the Latin quarter!

MUSEUMS/GALLERIES:

- Storm P Museet, Frederiksberg Runddel, Frederiksberg. Tel. 33 86 05 23

Primary exhibition or genre: Other.

Atmosphere: If you know and like the Danish black-and-white artist and  humorist Storm P – this is clearly worth a visit. You get into a good mood and have a good laugh while at the same time getting closer to the man, Storm P.

Other plusses: At the same time, you might take a walk in the beautiful park, Frederiksberg Have!

Atmosphere: You feel as if you were in classical Antiquity.

Other plusses: A nicely quiet and peaceful place to walk arouond and enjoy the atmosphere! You get away from a busy day and may ”dream” away in fantastic surroundings!

- Louisiana (Modern Art Museum), Gl. Strandvej 13,  Humlebæk

Primary exhibition or genre: Modern art

Atmosphere: It is necessary to take a 45 min. train ride from the Central Station if you want to visit Louisiana. In return, the trip is worth every penny! You get out to see a bit of the nature that surrounds our capital, as well as Louisiana’s phantastic exhibits, nature, and location.

Other plusses: Experience a smaller town in the neighbourhood of Copenhagen and its atmosphere and marvellous view over the Sound. Open until 10 pm. Tuesday – Friday.

PLACES TO BE IN COPENHAGEN:

- Amager Strandpark Amager Strandvej,  Copenhagen

Atmosphere: Both beach, ”laguna”, the possibility of kayak sailing, cycling, roller skating, swimming, and pure relaxation on the beach! Northern part of the beach: very characteristic nature. Southern part: ”City part” with an esplanade.

Other plusses: Beautiful view of the Øresund bridge and the Øresund coastline over to Sweden.

Frederiksberg  Have (Garden), Frederiksberg Rundel, Frederiksberg

Atmosphere: A wallk in Frederiksberg Garden, which is designed as a garden of the romantic style. You have here a view of Frederiksberg Castle, The Chinese Summerhouse from 1799, the Apis temple from 1802, Kildegrotten, Ønskehøjen, and Schweizerhuset from 1801. Buildings that are meant to be pure stimulation for your imagination.

Other plusses: Very, very beautiful, and it is possible to sail on the canals in the summertime. In the winter, one may skate at Frederiksberg Runddel!

RIDES

Copenhagen is the capital that is surrounded by the most areas of natural beauty, which provide great opportunities for cycle rides. You will find a map of all routes both in and outside the city at the Tourist Information Office, Vesterbrogade 3, Copenhagen V (straight across from the Tivoli main entrance). Ask at the reception of the Alexandra Hotel about cycle rentals!

Recommendation: Cycle ride on the coastal road Valby – Køge. One may stop and turn around whenever, and if the weather allows it, one rides past one beach after the other. A fresh plunge or a couple of hours’ relaxation on the beach is certainly a possibility! Should you stop at the harbors, you may no doubt enjoy a good, typical Danish lunch with shellfish and fish fillets!

Good plusses: Fantastic nature, good exercise, and you can get a good colour if the sun is shining.

Particularly good cocktails: Really good at making cocktails! Be aware that there may be queues at the entrance!

Price level: Medium.

Atmosphere: Quite likely Vesterbro’s most cozy café/bar!

Particularly good cocktails: Good cocktail, but draught beer is the specialty of the place!

Other plusses: On Saturday nights, the place changes into ”Ingrids Cocktailbar”, while the DJ plays electronic jazz.

Price level: Medium

Atmosphere: Local bar, small, hang-out bar, a good place to start, where the music is not so loud that one cannot talk together.

Particularly good cocktails: Not a cocktail bar! Simple drinks & special beer. Try for instance ”Rekordelig” a Swedish cider!

Other plusses: Near many other great go-out places!

SHOPPING PLACES:

- Islands Brygge (local area behind the waterfront)

Price level: Medium.

Atmosphere: Small local clothes designers, galleries, children’s clothes, and art can be found here! Not many tourists, but a lot of local life!

Other plusses: Local atmosphere and local cafés!  A good idea is to combine a walk on the waterfront, a Café visit, & shopping as the shops are few but good!

Price level: Right from low to high!

Atmosphere: A mix of Danish designers, trendy shops, ethnics, antiques, and galleries!

Other plusses: Parallel to Vesterbrogade, where the ordinarily known  ”chains” are found.
