The Hand of Uruguay

In Brava beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay, you can find one of the most famous landmarks of the country:  ‘The Hand’. Four pieces of metal come out of the sand resembling a hand inviting you to come to see it.

This sculpture made out of steel and cement was created during a competition in 1982. The creator of ‘The Hand’ is Mario Irarrazábal, originally from Chile; he also participated in other projects in Chile, Madrid, Italy and some countries of Africa. According to Mario, this artwork is creative, symbolic and familiar, representing humanity on earth and the development of life.

The since the day ‘The Hand’ was established in this area of Punta del Este it has been visited by thousands of tourists from every corner of the world.
