Bienvenus! The beautiful Côte d’Azur welcomes you this summer with the brightness and the beauty of its territory: a special place where the blue of the sea and the sky meet.
The French Riviera might be one of the most popular resort area in France, as well as a hot-spot for film lovers, but it still retains its traditional character, its charming atmosphere, mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine and heartwarming people.
Situated in the heart of the Riviera, Cannes is renowned for its film festival that takes place in May which fills its streets with Hollywood stars and celebrity spotters. But Cannes is not only the Red Carpet, the Palais du Festival and its glitzy hotels, but a beautiful seaside town that offers great weather all year long, white beaches, sports, culture and shopping.
This month, it’s time to leave behind the busy Croisette and the up-market shops to head to the very heart and soul of Cannes and the Côte d’Azur: the Provencal Markets.
The most cherished rite in Provence and its neighbouring Côte d’Azur, the market is a symbol, a way of life, a place where the rural communities meet and delicious local produce is sold. Enter a Provencal Market and hear the chattering of the merchants haggling over the price of their production with their customers: delicious fruit, fresh vegetable, vibrant fabric and quality handicraft. Every village, regardless of its dimension, has a weekly market selling high quality organic produce from farms of the surrounding areas.
Cannes is no exception: the traditional markets with their fruit, flowers and vegetables are a feast for the senses. Together with the antiques markets they represent one of the most popular and authentic tourist attraction.
Get lost in one of the markets that Cannes offers and find yourself in another dimension made of unique colours, perfumes and flavours, and live life at a slower pace.
Tucked away in the quarter of la Bocca is the casual and dusty Marché Forville, near the old port, probably the best Provencal market in Cannes, if not the best in the whole Côte d’Azur. Local merchants, producers, restaurants owners and tourists pack the Forville Market on Sunday. The Marché Forville is now a tradition for the Cannois, a true taste of the traditional Provence with a twist of Côte d’Azur: fresh local produce with a specific taste of Provence and the smell of the Riviera will give you the perfect feel of the real town. The best of the newly arrived flowers, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats and fish are on display and sale here. Most have been caught, grown or produced locally and are of great quality. On Mondays, the Marché Forville is a brocante market selling secondhand goods and antiques that retrace the history of the Cannois.
Smaller in size compared to the previous marché, the covered market in Place Gambetta invites you every morning (except on Mondays) in the heart of the city to discover a lively and popular atmosphere. Situated right in the center of the square, the oldest market in Cannes offers the colours and the flavours of Provence: bright and perfumed flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious cheese, fresh fish from the Mediterranean as well clothes.
If you haven’t had enough of market browsing in Cannes, less than 15 km away is Antibes, another gem of the French Riviera. Vibrant and elegant, the town thrives on floriculture: its roses and tulips are exported in the whole world. In Antibes, Provencal Markets can be found on Tuesday and Saturday morning in Place Amiral Barnaud, Thursdays in Place Nationale Vieil Antibes and Fridays in La Fontonne.
